Both sides playing for Political Advantage

As the leaderless election campaign rolls on the little cracks in perception and appearance are slowly starting to widen. While trying to put her best foot forward it seems as though an internal saboteur is doing the best to sink the Labor ship with all hands on board. This does not however discount the light that is being shone on the conduct of Australia’s current batch of politicians.

Paul Murray, in a West Australian article today is critical of the latest leaks because of the way this portrays Gillard. The context implies that she is making policy for political advantage rather than doing what is right.

Well duh.

Sorry Paul, but haven’t you been watching Australian politics for the past 10 years. In fact the Rudd era heralded a new level of this kind of methodology. Do not try and make Gillard seem like an original here. This has been the way of politics in this country for at least a decade and is becoming more entrenched as time goes on.

The days of strong leadership, ethical behaviour and doing what is right are long gone from the political spectrum. This is not to say that there are not politicians out there trying to do the right thing. If they belong to one of the two major parties though they may as well give up now. The strict policy of following the party line – particularly in Labor – makes moral stances and genuine integrity nigh impossible.

Tony Abbott is another clear example of populist politicks. His position on climate change is more enlightening than the Karma Sutra. Yet there is still no obvious strength shown to his conviction other than his original claim that the whole thing is BS. You really can’t come back from a statement like that even though Mr Abbott is trying to show a different public position on the issue. Is this because he has changed his mind? Unlikely. There is however substantial political advantage to be gained by this move.

While Paul Murray seems to be focused on Julia Gillard it should never be forgotten that this is the tactic endorsed and applied by the major parties to woo your vote. Nothing more, nothing less than politics played for the most advantage. For those of us who are interested in seeing real action not just the window dressing reserved for the masses who only look up blindly during the campaign the picture is bleak.

There are no great leaders on the horizon. No major party with the best interest of their constituents at heart. Just a commercialised platform designed to bedazzle as many voters as possible into believing their bunkum.
