If your not Australian then let me inform you on the plight of David Hicks, and every man caught in the quagmire that is Guantanamo Bay.
David Hicks was caught by the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan. He was handed into U.S. forces for custody.
After in invasion of Afghanistan, he's been in Guantanamo Bay ever since. Kept against his will without any charges laid against him for an indefinite amount of time. Now, there are possibly numerous others kept there, but this is stark example of US hidden faschim at its most obvious. Even when the US senate had a majority vote of no-cofidence on the Indefinite Detention of "detainees" nothing has been done save the few British Citizens who by the grace of British reasonign have brought them home, scared by the officers who tried to coax them for "information gathering".
Poor Hicksy. Complains about constant beating, sensory deprivation and sexual abuse have occured for years.
Problem is, he does not have any charges laid against him. His U.S. Army defense lawyer cannot even give details of any information Hicks told him for fear of incarceration himself. His legal defense team are not to be briefed or given any evidence to counter argue or use counter evidence to support any innocense.
Put yourself in his shoes. Anally brutalised, stomped on and deprived of anysensory stimulation for years on end. Having only 1 visit from your parents so far because of heavily restricted visitation rights. Having no charges against yourself until the U.S. forces having acquired enough evidence with unlimited time constraints, and evidence that will be displayed as a final surprise on your court day, if you do have one. Having routine visits from officers to "coax" you of information that will be used against you. And the year keep going on and on.
The only reason why he's there is because the US have "suspicions" of him partaking in terrorist activities (terrorist itself is an ambigious term; currently the people of Iran and other middle eastern people are calling American Forces terrorist; I for one think companies with bad commercials are terrorist for the sheer horror of having to watch stupid ads on tv).
We need to bring Hicks home. Inprison him; keep him under observation or better yet, do it under conventional law courtrooms where evidence gathering is truly transparent in the course of normal western law. Even battery hens would pity him. Treating a human being in an inhumane manner surely is the worst crime of all.
Perhaps Bush is secretly sending out a message to the rest of us: don;t give the impression as to cause suspicions of being a terrorist. Put on a good ol' Cowboy hat or Sombrero, flannel shirt and dumb down.

sadly enough though, as horrible as the treatment david hicks and the other prisoners at guantanamo receive is, the long established practise of rendition (recently revived) ensures that the worst crimes inflicted on prisoners wont be known to us in the west.
