ETS only one of Rudd's many problems

As King Kevin ponders his sinking poll ratings the direct blame on shelving the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) would appear to fall wide of the mark. Aspiring PM Tony Abbott remarked that “people are thinking this is a Government that doesn’t deliver …” a comment much closer to the mark than that of the current PM.
The past few weeks have not been kind to Labor. The truth of the matter though, is that the only person that Labor can look to for blame is Mr Rudd. The constant stream of policy failures, reviews given lip service, inability to convert thought into action and a general lack of anything that resembles quality leadership is starting to take its toll with the public.

Even for a popular Prime Minister at some point the rhetoric must be seen to be showing results. Policy ideas must be implemented, promises must be followed through. A failure to do this will sooner or later be noticed by even a devout following.
The tactic of targeting public soft spots as with the increase in tobacco tax and grabbing money from mining giants in the guise of Robin Hood is a feeble attempt to distract a reeling public from the string of massive failures topped off last week by the shelving of the ETS.
The fact is that the last two years have seen Rudd Labor deliver almost nothing. The endless spin has been shown to be just that: spin. There has been very little to show for all the rhetoric. Even where some action was taken – as with the school building project (BER) and the Insulation roll-out – the result has been less than satisfactory. The only real outcome is yet another set of inquiries and reviews of what went so wrong.
While Tony Abbott still has a long way to go to convince the voters that he can lead the country the path to a second term is uncertain for the incumbent. King Kevin has not left much of a mark except in Australia’s debit column. The positive returns of Rudd’s reign are yet to come to light. Labor must work hard in the coming months to prove to the Australian public that it deserves a second term in office. As of now they are not even close.
