Give the teachers their pay rise John

The state government would be prepared to blow nearly $60 Million on keeping the Grand Prix in Melbourne before giving teachers a well deserved pay rise.

The Victorian teachers are right to be demanding such a dramatic pay increase. It is only fair that they are in line with the rest of the country. Not only that, they should be getting paid more Australia wide.

People criticise teachers for the amount of holidays they enjoy and the fact they can spend their weekends away from the workplace on a weekly basis. Yes it is true they get a good deal with their holidays and their weekends, yet are they really kicking back for a relaxing movie or two on the couch during their spare time?

They are most likely savouring the spare time as a chance to finally catch up on report writing, marking students assignments, planning unit guides, writing up lesson plans, assessing outcomes, preparing for parent interviews and so on, the list is huge.

Not many people realise the amount of unpaid work teachers do. It is a stressful job that requires much more time and effort than the 8am til 3pm Monday to Friday illusion. Let's not forget the extra staff meetings and school function planning either.

So why is it not fair that a job of such demanding time and stress shouldn't be higher paid? The average salary for a school teacher is anywhere between $55,000 and $65,000 a year. They deserve a much healthier package than what they recieve.

For the Brumby government to declare that there is simply not enough money to support a 10 percent wage increase is insulting considering the amount of money this state is prepared to dedicate towards events like the Grand Prix which is growing less in popularity each year.

Working families should be with the teachers every step of the way in this battle. Teachers are responsible for the future of the next generation. They are responsible to somebodies son, somebodies daughter. The weight of expectation on their shoulders is immense and they feel every bit of that weight should their students underachieve.

It's time society recognises the pivotal role teachers play in everyone's lives and the amount of work they do to ensure the security and direction of so many young kids out there.

Pay up John!
