Lunatics are running the asylum

Gerry Harvey’s stinging attack on the amateur antics of the Rudd Government is right on the money. Through the entirety of their time in office this current Federal Government has not shown professionalism at any level.
With a string of policy failures, back-flips, back-downs, compromises, questionable practices, unattainable goals and a general lack of political courage, Rudd has his tarnished reputation and loss of public trust as the only memorable things he has achieved. Yet to be added to the list of accomplishments is the huge debt from fending off the Global Financial Crisis: debt which history may prove unnecessary.

For all its bluff and bluster the Rudd Labor Government has been unable to produce anything of real value for its term in office sans a hefty advertising bill. The unfolding catastrophe from the still unrealised Resource Super Profits Tax (RSPT) could prove to be the final nail which Labor has to drive into its own coffin. With opposition to the tax growing rapidly Rudd has his back to the wall as any back-down or compromise would be a fatal blow to Labor’s already slender re-election chances.
While the policy itself is remarkably unpopular for Rudd it is more than just another policy. This is the end game; the final chance for Labor. After proving unable to deliver on any of its major promises - including health reforms and the CPRS - Labor needs to get a few wins to have any hope of restoring public confidence. Although he is still talking tough Rudd is not looking good on the RSPT. A failure here and Rudd may as well start packing The Lodge.
This one term wonder is plummeting in the polls to levels almost beyond recovery. Final judgement may still be some months way but at this stage the prognosis appears terminal. The public have lost faith and are no longer listening. The days of Rudd’s playschool Government are nearly over. Let us hope the cost to the public is not too high from this failed venture into Labor rule.
