It’s a call that is becoming a little too much to bear: Let’s have a review, of what now? How many more reviews can the Australian people take? It is getting to the point that pretty soon we will have to review our review – that is if they haven’t already. Is there now a dedicated department of bureaucrats sitting around waiting for the next review or are they still busy finishing the last review?
The latest call for a review on education spending joins a long list of reviews conducted by the Rudd Government. They are not alone. The previous Howard Government conducted many reviews. Every State Government is lining up to conduct reviews. This is all well and good IF the information gleaned from the review is acted on. This does not appear to be the case. There must have been a review every year for the past 10 years into water use in the Murray-Darling, yet nothing has been done of any significance to act on any of these reviews. Education, unemployment, , health, population, immigration, taxation, climate, have all been subject to review after review yet nothing is being done to address the issues and problems uncovered by the reviews.
As a community Australians have the right to start asking: what is being done? Because, at present, all that is happening is reviews. It is time that Government’s at every level stopped conducting endless reviews and started to get on with implementing the reforms which are being put forward. Otherwise the only conclusion that can be drawn is that those requesting reviews are still waiting for one which gives them the answer they want. If our elected representatives cannot accept that reforms for the good of the people are waiting to be implemented and then get the process moving then maybe the public should be reconsidering who represents them. Time to stop procrastinating and get on with the job for which they were elected.
