Not more Labor promises?

The release of the Budget this week was the last hope for Labor of re-claiming the trust and goodwill of the electorate. They stand to be wildly disappointed. The deliberately conservative Budget is just what the economists are applauding yet the public at large can not be expected to be so enthused.
In its first term back in power Labor has left its mark but for all the wrong reasons. After going on an excessive and questionable spending spree, purportedly to stave off the Global Financial Crisis, cavernous gaps began to appear between Labor’s ability to conceptualise and its ability to deliver.

There has been a series of serious mistakes made by the Rudd Labor administration which border on criminal and are certainly negligent in performance. Policy has made on the run without sufficient planning or review. The decisions made by this Government have been reckless and often contrary to public service advice.
An earlier post on this site lists the main areas of failure by this Government (It will take more than a Budget to save King Kevin). Suffice to say that Labor has failed to deliver on all its key promises. Every major decision has been a failure. Many of these policies – such as the BER and the Insulation Installation Scheme – have been without effective oversight and consequently subject to exploitation and mismanagement.
That Labor could expect a ‘No Frills’ Budget would woo back the Australian public highlight the arrogance of the Rudd Government and its contempt the electorate. After the scandalous waste of taxpayer money over the past two years the public have a right to expect more. Not only have they been saddled with massive debt but they have yet to see any value for the expenditure.

What the Government needs to do now is improve its ability to manage effectively without impacting on service provision or staff numbers in the public service, decrease the burden on the taxpayer and reduce its debt. This cannot be done with the publication of a single document. The failures of the past two years endow the electorate with enough scepticism to negate this attempt. The public needs to see effective action in practice not more promises of action. With an election approaching quickly it is uncertain if Labor will have enough time to provide that proof.
