Rudd Fails On Health Reform

April 20th 2010 22:23
Category: No Category
According to a report in The Australian today Really Long Link the meeting between the States and the Federal Government over health reform has reached agreement. Under this new agreement the States will continue to manage the health system with additional Federal funding. Did I miss something here? Wasn’t the whole point to take control of the health system away from the States? If the States can’t manage their health system – which they have consistently, proven unable to do in the past: why is this an improvement?

This is not to say that the Commonwealth would have done a better job of running the health system. Recent failures in the Insulation and Education sectors show that the Commonwealth has a long way to go in proving its management credentials.
However, for Mr Rudd, this is yet another failure to follow through on promises made to the electorate at the last election. Since being elevated to the role of PM there has been a lot of talk on numerous initiatives and policies yet very little has actually been done – accept maybe another review (see earlier post on reviews). Labor has failed to live up to the expectations given prior to their election and the people deserve to see better from their representatives.
As much as many disliked John Howard – myself included – he did get things done, implemented the changes he said he would and, in some case – such as the GST and Workchoices – implemented policy he did not say he was going to implement. Regardless of the folly of Howard’s policy he did get on with the job something Mr Rudd still has a long way to go on.
